by | Sep 10, 2023

Today we celebrate the National Day of Catalonia in Spain. You may wonder why there is a “national” day of a nation within Spain, but you may also recall from our Galicia blog, that this figure of national identity and autonomy is existent in Spain.

11th September is a date of most historical significance in Catalonia, marking the fall of Barcelona in 1714 during the Spanish War of Succession and the territory’s loss of sovereignty.

And as is the case every year, commemorative activities take place in Catalonia and abroad on the 11th and the days leading up to the anniversary of the fateful event.

What’s special about Catalonia, you may ask? For starters, it has been the proud home to the world’s celebrated masters of art Salvador Dali and Antoni Gaudí.

How do people spend this day and why is it so popular among travelers? Well, the local festivities transform the streets of Catalonia into vibrant, lively spaces. You can witness parades, concerts, and street performances that hold an energetic and festive atmosphere that’s contagious. The blend of traditional elements with contemporary celebrations adds a unique touch.

Have fun learning!
