This is one of the most beautiful and colorful festivals in the world. “The festival of flowers” is as visually striking as you could imagine. But where does this tradition come from?
Well, since 1957 Colombia has been hosting this parade, which lasts 10 days and is a showcase of the country’s culture and the biodiversity of the flowers in the region. The center of this parade is the so called “cultura silletera”, a practice that was created during the colony.
Given the steepness of the hills, the merchants (so called “silleteros” now) implemented a method to bring their creations down to the city so they could sell them.
The “silletas” are like chairs, and they are supported by people’s backs, they hold the beautiful flower creations and allow them to be transported without ruining them. These merchants usually carry anywhere from 50 to 90 kg on their backs. Impressive, isn’t it?
During the festival, different kinds of flower arrangements are presented and there’s a winner for each category, then they all parade through the city so people can appreciate the stunning display of art.
La fiesta de las flores is mainly about this parade and the flowers, it’s a celebration of our traditions and heritage, but there’s also food, concerts from national and international artists, dance, and more music. It really is one of the most vibrant parties in South America.

Have fun learning!
