Las Fallas de Valencia (The Festival of Fire)

by | May 7, 2023

Why do millions of people travel to Spain every year to experience this iconic mix of art, tradition and satire?

Well, the spectacle is amazing and to see it in person is absolutely incredible. You will feel you are in a movie, but that’s not all that makes Fallas special. This tradition is said to be from the XIX century or even older.

The story behind the festival is a bit hazy, but the most popular theory by far is that it comes from carpenters who, in celebration of San Jose and the end of winter, would burn the wood outside their shops. As the story goes, with time these pieces took on human form, which are displayed in the city to amuse the people before the big finale when they burn. This is just one of several different theories, most are from the XIX century but others date back to the 1600s.

Regardless of how it came to be, this tradition has evolved over the years to become one of the most important celebrations in Valencia and it takes place between the 14th and the 19th of March every year.
